Sesame (Sesamum indium) is a flowering plant in the genus Sesamum. Numerous wild relatives occur in Africa and a smaller number in India. Sesame seed is considered to be the oldest oilseed crop known to Man, Grown and cultivated for its edible seeds, sesame seeds are widely naturalised in tropical regions around the world and is cultivated for its edible seeds, which grow in pods. Sesame has one of the highest oil contents of any seed. With a rich nutty flavor, it is a common ingredient in cuisines across the world.
The world harvested about 3.84 million metric tonnes of sesame seeds in 2010. The largest producer of sesame seeds in 2010 was Myanmar; which was 18.3% of the world's total production. India was very closed to this position by producing nearly 650,000 tonnes of sesame seeds the same year. However, in recent years India has got the lead on sesame seeds production which reached its peak of almost 1 million Tone in 2015. In addition to being the largest producer of sesame seeds India is also the largest exporter of sesame seeds in the world. Gujarat is placed as number one for the largest producer of sesame seeds in India.
